BOLC Course Overview

Course Length: 12 weeks, three days

Proponent School: United States Soldier Support Institute, Fort Jackson, South Carolina

Common Core Training: This training is designed to develop professionalism, reinforce the ability to support combat operations on the modern battlefield and to provide instruction in a broad rage of subject areas. Topics covered in this training include:

  • Leadership Training
  • (Phase II)
  • Teamwork Development Course
  • Army Operations Doctrine & Tactics
  • Organizational Supply & Maintenance
  • Training Management
  • Military History Presentation (Battle Analysis)

Professional Development Training: Speakers from tenet organizations will present professional development classes during the course to provide students with information on various Army programs and services. Topics covered in this training include:

  • Army Safety Program
  • Health & Wellness Briefing
  • Equal Opportunity Policies
  • Military Law & Justice
  • Customs & Courtesies
  • Uniform Wear & Appearance
  • Briefing Techniques
  • Army Total Fitness Program

Field Post/Command Post Exercise (FTX/CPX): This combined exercise is designed to provide students with realistic technical and tactical training on essential skills inherent to a finance detachment and its tenet units. This is a multi day exercise whose tactical objectives include:

  • Establish a FOB for the finance detachment.
  • Utilize equipment organic to a finance detachment to establish operations (GP Mediums, Camouflage Nets, Radios, etc)
  • Plan the deployment and redeployment of the unit
  • Train and execute selected tasks from the Mission Training Plan
  • React to enemy threats as they arise

Leadership Opportunities: You will serve in a leadership position in some capacity during OBC. Several types of positions exist throughout the duration of the course. First there are class leadership positions appointed to students by the class advisors. Normally individual hold these positions for half of the course, at which time other individuals assume these roles. These positions include:

  • Class Leader
  • Class S1
  • Class S3
  • Class S4
  • Squad Leader

Other class positions are on a volunteer basis primarily; however all positions must be filled. These positions remain with the same student for the duration of the course. Having one of these positions does not preclude the student from having one of the appointed positions. These positions include:

  • Academic Officer
  • Automation Officer
  • Battle Analysis Officer
  • Billeting Officer
  • Community Project Officer
  • Mail Officer
  • Assistant Mail Officer 
  • Physical Fitness Officer
  • Public Affairs Officer
  • Safety Officer
  • Social Officer
  • Dining In Officer


A final group of leadership positions exist during the field exercise. Leadership positions exist within these elements which students will rotate through during the course of the exercise. Each student will hold at least one leadership position in each cell during the exercise.
